Coming summer 2023. This clip lays out some of the big ideas we'll explore in this 12-lesson on-demand course, starting with the "binary" misconception that strumming is just "d's and u's". Of course it is, to a degree, but some people make so much more music than others. This course will explore why. Nice lesson on this song and explanation on Buck's technique of combining rhythmic strums or brushes with the cascade of arpeggios. He and Alex Lifeson are the undisputed masters of this approach to cover a lot of sonic ground with a guitar that keeps the train rolling. You can almost imagine Buck as clean jangly version of Lifeson or Lifeson as a overdriven chorused version of Buck. My guitar teacher pointed this out to me in the 80's and its always stuck with me.

    "Tricky to count... but it feels good." Right on. I think us beginners have more issues with strumming and rhythm more than anything. At some point you have to feel the beat like dancing instead of marching.

    Hi Dave. I wonder if you could do a approximation lesson of Johnny A's version (totally cool) of "Wichita Lineman"? He uses a electric, but i think it could be done on the old Larivée. "Rainy Night in Georgia" also uses the regular D and the flat D to good effect. I like your lessons. Thanks.

    Wow, i love this dude. I've been trying to figure out Candyman from the 1970 San Francisco PBS broadcast of it. This is pretty much exactly how he played it. I love the jingle of this version. Reminds me of a 1920s or 1930s blues shuffle. Mixed with California psychedelic rock. Jerry was so unique. Anyway every tutorial is literally the polished album version or some 1980 version. And i like the raw street band sound better. Raw asf. Thanks homie.

    There are two more cords to this song . The chorus has two other cords . It will sound funny if You do not learn it right. There are cord extensions for this song and sound awesome. Trust Me I have played this tune for 50 years .

    I have giant hands and my Jazz archtop is a 7 string converted to a wide neck six string.... I play Jazz, main instrument is saxophone (51 years). Recent to guitar. Fitting question: Can you push your thumb all the way through any two strings (sideways)? I want to have an acoustic made for me and am trying to "dial in" the correct neck (custom) width. Thank you!

    • @NashvilleGuitarGuru
      @NashvilleGuitarGuru 3 місяці тому

      I would think that with big hands, the thumb position will depend on what allows your fingertips to lead freely. Search for video of Tony Rice and see what his left hand looked like on a dreadnought. Stylistically it may not relate but you'll notice his thumb hardly moves, because the fingers are so long that they don't need help making the reaches. My hand needs to rely on the forearm and wrist. Don't know if that answers your question but might offer some perspective.

    • @JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton
      @JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton 3 місяці тому

      @@NashvilleGuitarGuru Thank you, I will look for a Tony Rice video. What I'm getting at here is, since I am having a custom sized guitar built for me, is exactly how to size the fretboard. My Eastman 7 to 6 string conversion Jazz archtop is 2 1/8" at the nut and about 60 mm E to E where the right hand plays. I have 12s on it, for Jazz. Especially for the style of playing in your video, where the thumb is used a lot, I am trying to figure out that spacing. Of course with a thumbpick it's probably less important (shopping for those, I have one, it's too small), but just as a "yardstick," if you hold your thumb parallel to the strings and push your thumb into the space between low E and low A, does the thumb touch the strings? If so, when you "part" the strings with your thumb, how much to they push apart? Anyway, I know this is an oddball question. I am enjoying your video, you do an excellent job of explaining things, particularly for somebody like me, who is a saxophonist of many decades but new to guitar.
